Culture Pass Presents: From Tenements to Stained Glass: Exploring the Eldridge Street Synagogue

Join us and our friends from the Museum at Eldridge Street for this family-friendly exploration of a hidden gem and New York City landmark. Built in 1887, the Eldridge Street Synagogue is the first grand synagogue built by Eastern European Jews in the United States and a symbol of immigrant aspiration. The grand building was nearly lost to neglect before the Museum’s massive restoration. Today, it stands as a window into the neighborhood’s past. This program will explore the history of the synagogue and the history of immigration at the turn of the century. We will also explore the building itself, with a fun stained glass activity!
