Libraries Make NYC Stronger

HELP KEEP NYC LIBRARIES STRONG!

Queens Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library and The New York Public Library have thankfully been spared from deep cuts in the City’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Still, we are facing rising and uncovered costs, along with growing demand for our services. We need additional investment to ensure our communities can continue to depend on us.

New Yorkers rely on their local branches for high-quality programs and library materials, all at no cost. Without meaningful investment, we would be forced to make difficult choices such as spending less on books, ESOL classes, homework help, technology, and branch maintenance and repairs. That’s why we’re asking you to send a message to our city’s leaders asking them to support more funding for libraries.

Especially in these uncertain times, we know how much people are counting on libraries for reliable information, trusted assistance, and opportunities to learn and grow. Please take a quick moment to tell city officials to invest in libraries!

Dear Mayor Eric Adams, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Council Majority Leader Amanda Farías, Council Finance Chair Justin Brannan, Committee on Libraries Chair Carlina Rivera, and Council Member,

As you consider the City’s spending priorities for Fiscal Year 2026, I respectfully ask that you increase funding for New York City’s public library systems. The three public library systems offer so much that my family, friends and neighbors rely on. Whether for great reading materials, homework help, job search assistance, ESOL classes, digital literacy workshops, or one of the many other programs they offer, I know I can go to my local branch to find whatever I need.

QPL, BPL and NYPL are facing rising and uncovered costs, and are trying to keep up with the growing demand for their services. Without significant investment, they will need to make difficult decisions, such as spending less on books, technology, crucial programs, and branch maintenance and repairs. Additionally, they need reliable funding to modernize their buildings, through renovations and replacing critical infrastructure.

You understand the vital role libraries play in our neighborhoods and in our lives. Please prioritize investment in New York City’s three public library systems in the upcoming budget!

Thank you for your consideration.
