Video Visitation is a free service made possible by the NYC Mayor’s Office and the New York City Council. Through this program, families may visit select library locations and engage in a one-hour video chat session with their loved ones who are incarcerated at any Rikers Island facility.

Queens Public Library has three participating locations for Video Visitation:

Central Library
89-11 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica
Hours: Monday through Friday, 3PM to 7PM

Far Rockaway Swing Space
10-03 Beach 20 Street, Far Rockaway
Hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, 3PM to 6PM

Long Island City Library
37-44 21 Street
Hours: Friday, 4PM to 5PM (Monday-Thursday available by request)

Orientation for Video Visitation

In order to schedule a Video Visit, patrons must first schedule an orientation to complete the forms required for participation. Orientations are 20-minute sessions and may be scheduled Monday through Friday between 12PM and 5PM at one of the three participating library locations.

  • All potential visitors 18 years of age and older MUST be present for orientation. Children do not have to be present, but a parent or legal guardian must give consent for their children during the session.
  • Unfortunately, if you are banned from visiting Rikers Island or having communication with the incarcerated patron, you will not be eligible to participate in the program.
  • Please have government-issued identification with you for orientation and all visits scheduled thereafter.

Scheduling a Video Visit

Once you have completed orientation, you may request a Video Visit.

All requests should be made at least 48 hours in advance of the desired date. You will receive a call from library staff once your request is confirmed.

Upon arrival, families are greeted by a Correctional Outreach team member and escorted to the location of their Video Visit. If there are children participating in the visit, the room will be furnished with books, toys, and other resources to make their visit as comfortable and successful as possible.
