In 2021, the acclaimed theatre company Cheek by Jowl joined forces with filmmaker Sophie Fiennes to create the first in-depth documentation of their unique process and philosophy. Fiennes’s film “Acting” (2024) follows eight actors—four Macbeths and four Lady Macbeths—for 11 days. Working in pairs, they investigate key scenes and soliloquies from Shakespeare’s tragedy. But the film isn’t about the play. It offers a new vantage on acting and theatre, revealing text animated in ways more subtle and surprising than even devoted theatre-goers might imagine.
