Culture Pass: A Virtual Walking Tour of the Jewish LES with the Museum at Eldridge Street

A century ago, the Lower East Side was the epicenter of the Jewish immigrant community in America. It was there, amongst the bustling tenement apartments, that they prayed, played, worked, shopped, and learned as they built their new lives. While in the years since, much of the area’s Jewish population has moved away, signs of the past still exist within its modern streets. During this virtual walking tour in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, we will explore a small slice of the neighborhood as a window into this larger history. We will explore tenement apartments, pushcart markets, banks, newspapers, parks, schools, and pickle stores, each of which can reveal a different facet of day-to-day Jewish immigrant life from a century ago.
