Literary Thursdays: Clare Pollard, Author of “Lives of the Female Poets”

Don’t miss this episode of Literary Thursdays in honor of National Poetry Month! Poet, editor, and translator Clare Pollard celebrates history’s greatest female poets in this playful poetry collection that offers glimpses into her everyday life and those of the poets who have come before. Pollard’s poems remix, adapt, and channel figures from Enheduanna, the first recorded poet, through to Wanda Coleman. Probing the idea of the “Poetess” over time, her poems about writers’ lives include sonnets for Anne Locke, who wrote the first English sonnet sequence; a sestina for Elizabeth Bishop; and a series of prose poems about Emily Brontë. Whether imagining a “three-martini afternoon” at the Ritz with Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton, or exploring the ways women writers have been erased from the canon, Pollard provides a plethora of portraits of amazing female poets through the ages.
