Seeing Flowers, Seeing the Self: Sogetsu Ikebana Art

English: Sogetsu Ikebana is a school of flower art that originated in modern Japan, emphasizing freedom, individuality, and contemporary aesthetics. Unbound by traditional forms, it views ikebana as an artistic expression that resonates with its time. This ikebana performance by Sogetsu instructor Demin Fan is rooted in the philosophy of the Sogetsu School. Through the interplay of plant materials, line, space, and bodily movement, it unfolds a dialogue between flowers and people, nature and the inner self. The act of arranging itself becomes creation—the tension between flowers and vessels, together with momentary intuition, forms an art in motion. As they watch, the audience is not only seeing flowers, but also, through rhythm and negative space, gradually seeing themselves. This program is funded by the Starr Foundation.
