The Sankofa Series is a monthly program at the Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural Center that explores Black history, art, and culture. It began during COVID-19 in response to national conversations about Black history and the Black Lives Matter movement and is now being brought back in a new form.
This October, explore the Black Anime and Manga fandom as we explore the history behind Black America's interest in anime, the growth of the subculture, and more! This month includes weekly sessions such as a manga drawing workshop, discussions on Black intersectionality and culture in anime and manga, anime film screenings, and talks with creators and fans.
For the month of October, we meet every Thursday at 5:00pm. The program uses resources from the Black Heritage Reference Center as well as online resources.
This program is funded through grant from the New York State Black Legislative Task Force
