Juneteenth: Freedom is a New York Story: Honoring the Radical History of Black Freedom Celebrations
From Emancipation Day in 1827 to this year's Juneteenth celebrations, Black freedom celebrations are an essential part of our city's history. Whether a parade or street party, these celebrations reflect a long radical tradition of Black joy, celebration, and resistance.
In honor of Juneteenth, join Dominique Jean-Louis, Chief Historian, Center for Brooklyn History, Brooklyn Public Library and Prithi Kanakamedala, CUNY, author of "Brooklynites: The Remarkable Story of the Free Black Community that Shaped a Borough," as they reflect on episodes of our city's history in which "feet were jubilant to songs of freedom!"
