Culture Bridge: Blues History, 1920s to 1950s: How Key Events Shaped Black Music in America

The world and the United States were remade in the three decades between the 1920’s and the 1950’s. Jim Crow, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Great Migration all reshaped America, and the Black community was at the center of that re-shaping. Black music underwent a great many changes in that time. The evolution of the blues provides a mirror of the changes in society during that time, which are still reverberating today.
