DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Children’s Library Discovery Center Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting in the development of system-wide training with a focus on Science, Technology and Engineering concepts for all staff who serve youth. Supports the Children’s Library Discovery Center (CLDC) management and Queens Public Library’s initiatives by implementing goals and work plans to manage the daily operations of the center.
- Assures outreach to schools serving children up to the age of 12. Supports staff outreach to children’s science museums and cultural institutions to develop partnerships and to implement shared programming where available.
- Continuously investigates and stays abreast of rapidly changing trends and technologies to keep the CLDC fresh and inviting to customers.
- Under the direction of the Children’s Library Discovery Center Assistant Director, this position is responsible for the performance management, motivation, development and training of staff.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of dynamic and compelling services and programs for children with a focus on developing children’s activities that serve the local community and the borough of Queens. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the communities, demographics and interests of customers.
- Supports and provides delivery of children’s services, programs and outreach activities. Evaluates and recommends Central Library’s children’s programs and outreach activities. Collaborates with Children’s Library Discovery Center Assistant Director to develop a variety of quality Children’s programs and outreach activities that fully engage the community and provide an aspirant total experience for children.
- Ensures quality outreach programs and services are sufficiently provided as specified by the CLDC Assistant Director. Develops and maintains positive relationships with local organizations and schools.
- The CLDC Assistant Manager will directly assist in the coaching, training and development of staff and work collaboratively with the CLDC Assistant Director and the supervisors of staff to contribute to their overall performance management. May lead and facilitate cross-functional Central Library staff meetings.
- Ensures and provides quality customer service to internal and external customers. Continually participates in the planning, implementation and monitoring of public/customer service activities. Promotes staff and customer understanding of the wide range of Queens Public Library programs and services. Directs and performs readers advisory.
- Continually evaluates CLDC collections. Identifies children’s materials for acquisition with a focus on developing a collection that meets the needs of the local community and the borough of Queens. Directs and performs Queens Public Library merchandizing practices and standards.
- Manages the daily operations and delivery of children’s services and programs. Supports the achievements of Central Library’s objectives for children’s services. Reviews work methods and recommends best practices and procedures that support and improve daily operations.
- Continually collaborates and coordinates cross-functionally with Central Library, Programs & Services department and other staff.
- Effectively and efficiently manages budgets.
- Assists in the management of the Central Library, as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Requires an ALA accredited Master’s degree, a New York State Public Librarian’s Certificate and performance of standard or above in public service positions.
- A minimum of 4 years of Library Service, at least one of which shall have been in a managerial position at the Supervising Librarian level with consistent standard or above standard performance required.
- Must be knowledgeable of trends in public library service.
- Must have proficient cross-functional team management, collaboration and consensus building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and maintain library-wide perspective while delivering individual goals.
- Must be able to lead, coach and develop staff to optimal performance levels.
- Must be able to establish and maintain positive cooperative working relationships within all levels of the organization. Provide exemplary customer service to the public and internal customers. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Library, Museum or similar management experience.
- Budget management experience.
